Austria have lost RB Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner to a thigh injury ahead of the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

He sustained the problem during the warm-up before the 1-0 friendly win over Tunisia on Monday, and an MRI on Tuesday confirmed he will not take part, according to BuLi News.

"This is, of course, very bitter news for Christoph and for us as a team. He is an important player and a key figure within our squad. Our full support now goes towards his recovery," said Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick.

There was better news on David Alaba, who was withdrawn at half-time, with scans showing no muscle injury.

He will travel to the United States with the rest of the squad on Thursday as planned.
