Club Bruges clinched a 20th Belgian title after a 2-2 draw at Malines. Union Saint-Gilloise’s 0-0 at La Gantoise leaves Bruges four points clear with one round to play.
L'Équipe reports that the crown was sealed on Thursday evening without Bruges needing to win.
Ivan Leko’s side saw Christos Tzolis strike a powerful opener, then tee up Nicolo Tresoldi to regain the lead, before Malines levelled late.
Second after the regular phase, Bruges transformed their play-offs with seven wins in nine. Since March, the 24-year-old Greek winger has produced nine goals and 12 assists, including one goal and three assists against Union Saint-Gilloise last weekend.
Last season’s runners-up have now claimed a fifth title in seven years. With a notably young side, only three of the 14 players on the pitch on Thursday were older than 24, and parts of the squad may need rebuilding this summer. Beyond Tzolis, centre-back Joel Ordonez is among those who could attract heavy interest.
