Villarreal Femenino have tied down María Cienfuegos, Cienfu, to a new contract running to 2027. The club announced the extension on Monday.

Born 08/04/2001 in Langreo, Asturias, the midfielder first joined in 2020/21 and played an active role in the club’s historic rise to the elite. She made 76 appearances in that initial spell, returned in 2024/25, and has now reached 132 official games.

In 2025/26 her importance was underlined as she featured in 30 matches, scoring one. She started 28 of those, anchoring the Submarino’s midfield.

Villarreal Femenino missed out on promotion in stoppage time of the play-off final. After a 1-1 draw at the Ciudad Deportiva José Manuel Laneza, they led 0-1 away to Valencia Féminas, a score that would have been enough. Valencia equalised in the 100th minute to make it 1-1, extra time brought no further goals and Valencia went up.

Villarreal were a Primera team for 79 minutes on the night, and will aim to go up next season. With Cienfu staying, they retain a standout presence for the next push.
