Manchester City’s charity, City in the Community, has announced the launch of a brand-new Masters in Sport Coaching and Performance, developed in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).
This new Masters degree represents the next step in CITC’s commitment to empowering healthier lives through football, building on the success of the existing City Degree programme with MMU.
By blending academic excellence with real-world experience, the course prepares graduates to become leaders in sport – from elite performance to community development – while ensuring they also develop transferable skills to succeed in wider industries.
Students will also gain access to unique placements at Manchester City Academy and Manchester City Women’s Football Club.
Adam Field, from Manchester Metropolitan University commented on the course: “We’re thrilled to see our partnership with City in the Community continue to grow, creating opportunities for future leaders across all areas of sport.
"This master’s degree, focused on performance sport, builds on the strong foundation of our undergraduate Community Football Coaching programme, giving aspiring sport professionals the chance to innovate, develop their skills, and make a real impact across the sporting ecosystem”.
The 12-month course covers areas including applied performance, sport psychology, coaching practice, and equality and inclusion – equipping students to make a lasting impact both on and off the pitch.
The announcement builds on CITC’s existing Foundation and Batchelor offering – a pioneering initiative which has already supported hundreds of young people aged 18+ to gain a university education, with many going on to gain employment at City in the Community.
City in the Community CEO, Mike Geary, said: "At City in the Community, we believe education is one of the most powerful ways football can change lives.
"Since 2018, our City Degree has given young people the chance to combine university study with unique opportunities across Manchester City.
“Now, by launching this Masters in Sport Coaching and Performance, we are proud to expand that pathway even further. This new programme not only opens doors to advanced study but also helps to set a benchmark for what football charities can achieve in higher education.
“As one of the first charities in world football to deliver a full degree-to-masters pathway, we are preparing the next generation of leaders who will shape sport – in elite performance and in communities.”
The City Degree programme is part of City in the Community’s Healthy Futures pillar, which creates education pathways and supports employability. City in the Community empowers healthier lives with city youth through football.
