Old Trafford can be one of the most testing of venues, but City will make the short trip across town buoyed by a more than impressive record there over the past 15 years or so.

In what will be the first derby in charge for Enzo Maresca, City will also be seeking to further build on a superb start to the season which has seen us win all three Premier League games so far to sit top of the table.

Ahead of our latest encounter, we run the rule over the last five meetings between the Blue and Red halves of Manchester, where honours have been very much even.

Pep Guardiola’s City suffered a frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford as United secured a winning start to life under interim manager Michael Carrick.

In what was to prove Guardiola’s final derby in charge of City, the Blues had stepped out seeking to secure a precious three points and so step up the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Instead, with City hampered by injuries to a host of key performers, it was the hosts who ultimately prevailed.

Bryan Mbuemo broke the deadlock by finding the target on 65 minutes and United then struck again through Patrick Dorgu 14 minutes from time to seal the three points.

The Blues romped to an emphatic derby win at the Etihad – with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both proving United’s nemesis once again.

On what was a day to savour, City were utterly dominant in every single facet of the game.

Gianluigi Donnarumma enjoyed a fine debut in goal, the Italian goalkeeper marking the occasion by producing a sublime second half save to deny Bryan Mbuemo.

But the day was all about City’s attacking prowess.

Foden scored a superb header to put City ahead in the 18th minute rounding off the first of two pinpoint assists from Jeremy Doku.

City’s Belgian winger then played in Haaland for City’s second, before the striker powered from his own half to score our third – with the Norwegian also hitting the post in between.

It was also the perfect return to form for Guardiola’s side after losses to both Spurs and Brighton.

For once a Manchester derby failed to truly ignite with both sides ultimately settling for a point apiece.

In what was in truth a lacklustre affair of few clear-cut chances, Omar Marmoush carved out City’s best two efforts.

The Egyptian striker twice forced United Andre Onana into making key second half saves.

Meanwhile at the other end, Blues keeper Ederson produced an excellent save shortly after the break to deny United’s Joshua Zirkzee to ensure that both sides shared the spoils in what proved the 54th derby stalemate.

City 1-2 UNItEd: Dec 15 2024

Two late, late goals saw United claim a smash and grab victory on what proved a hugely frustrating evening at the Etihad.

City had appeared set fair for victory over United when Josko Gvardiol powered Guardiola’s side ahead in the 30th minute with a well-placed header.

Phil Foden then went close to doubling the advantage with City dominating both territory and possession.

However there proved a sting in the tale as the visitors pinched all three points late in the game.

First Bruno Fernandes equalised from the penalty spot on 88 minutes after Amad Diallo had been fouled in the box before Diallo then struck from the tightest of angles on 90 minutes to steal victory for the visitors.

Phil Foden produced two stunning shrikes as City recovered from a goal down to overpower United 3-1 and so step up our pursuit of what would prove a historic fourth straight Premier League title.

City had fallen behind to a thunderous Marcus Rashford shot on eight minutes - against the run of play - and spent the next 50 minutes or so trying to find a way past a resolute United back-line.

But Foden again demonstrated his appetite when pitted against United, levelling on 56 minutes with a stunning screamer into the top corner from 20 yards.

And Foden it was who struck again via a delightful second goal ten minutes from the end of normal time.

Erling Haaland then wrapped up victory with a clinical finish following excellent work by Rodri to make it 3-1 in added time as the Blues moved within a point of leaders Liverpool.
