Claudio Echeverri could earn a bigger role at Benfica, with Marco Silva attentive to the young Argentine’s progress. According to Glorioso 1904, his debut hinted at the creative spark Silva wants.
He featured for 18 minutes in the 3-1 win over Gil Vicente and set up compatriot Gianluca Prestianni. The cameo stirred curiosity about what he can add to the side.
Silva used a three-week pause to work more closely with him, seeking to speed up his adaptation and understanding of the team’s ideas. After the Gil Vicente match, the coach praised his calmness on the ball, his willingness to ask for it and take risks, and the way he arrived in the box despite limited training time, much of it through video and analysis.
Echeverri joined on loan from Manchester City after underwhelming spells at Bayer Leverkusen and Girona. He played 11 games for Leverkusen, then 16 for Girona, recording one goal and one assist with the Spanish club.
He is at Benfica until the end of the season, with an option to buy that could take the deal beyond 20 million euros. City have a buy-back option of 21 million euros, and at Luz he also has support from compatriots Enzo Barrenechea and Prestianni.
Benfica resume on 11 October against Vitória de Guimarães, when Echeverri could get another chance to impress. He is competing directly for the 10 role with Georgiy Sudakov.
