Sunderland’s December 1979 signing of Argentina midfielder Claudio Marangoni marked a notable moment in the club’s history. According to Sunderland Echo, the classy midfielder arrived from San Lorenzo and briefly lit up Roker Park before returning to South America.

Born in Rosario in 1954, the same city as Lionel Messi, Marangoni came through in Argentina. He started his senior career in 1974 with Chacarita Juniors.
