After FC Bayern’s 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen, the performance of the refereeing team is causing discussion, with coach Vincent Kompany expressing clear criticism of several decisions after the match
The top-of-the-table Bundesliga match between Bayer Leverkusen and FC Bayern ended in a 1-1 draw, but the result quickly faded into the background in sporting terms. Several controversial decisions by referee Christian Dingert caused much discussion – including among Bayern coach Vincent Kompany
After the match, the Belgian initially focused on his team’s performance, but at the same time clearly criticized individual scenes
„I’m incredibly proud of the team’s mentality today. A lot happened, there were phases about which you can have different opinions and which influenced the game. We got a red card for Jackson] out of the blue. There’s no discussion about that. But you can argue about Lucho’s sending off. I can’t understand that,“ said Kompany
The yellow card shown to Luis Diaz in the closing stages of the match was a particular source of incomprehension for the Bayern coach. The attacking player went to ground in the 84th minute after a challenge with Leverkusen keeper Blaswich. Referee Dingert deemed the scene a foul and sent Diaz off with a second yellow card
Dingert later admitted that his decision had been too harsh: „During the game, I saw the incident as a penalty. I saw that. When I look at the replay now, it’s clear that it wasn’t a penalty. But the yellow card was very harsh. I wouldn’t give it now,“ he said on Sky
Two disallowed goals by Munich also caused discussion: both Jonathan Tah and Harry Kane had the ball hit their arm immediately before a goal was scored, which is why Dingert rescinded both goals after a VAR review
Kompany finds these decisions difficult to understand: „As for Jonathan Tah’s goal: what should he have done? The ball bounced off his arm and onto his foot, there was no movement. Anyone who has ever played soccer knows what I’m talking about. As for Harry’s goal, I can’t understand it either. For me, it was a clear goal. I don’t know what he should have done.“
The dismissal of Nicolas Jackson in the 41st minute remained undisputed, however, as the attacker was too late against Terrier and hit his opponent on the ankle
Despite the turbulent match and several controversial decisions, FC Bayern showed great morale. After Aleix Garcia (6) had given them an early lead, Luis Diaz equalized for Munich in the 69th minute

In the end, it was a 1-1 draw in Leverkusen – and a Bayern coach who was proud of his team but quibbled with several decisions by the refereeing team
„As I said, I’m proud, but there were situations where you can have different opinions,“ the 39-year-old summed up.
