Richard Hughes has taken a certain degree of action to alleviate the pressure on the centre of defence during this transfer window - but none of those signings are ready for an immediate start.
Noah Adekoya and Mor Talla Ndiaye have been brought in but will feature for Rob Page’s under-21s before being considered for first-team duty.
In a similar boat is another young centre-back in the shape of Ifeanyi Ndukwe - who will join the club in summer after he’s turned 18.
It’s clear a full centre-back rebuild is on the cards - featuring Leoni at the heart of operations.
Konate is out of contract in summer 2026 with Van Dijk and Gomez following suit a year later. And there are encouraging signs that Jeremy Jacquet will be part of the Liverpool defensive revolution.
The 20-year-old Rennes man has astounded recruiters from around Europe’s top leagues with his form in France’s top flight.
Jacquet is on the radar of Chelsea - who have centre-back issues of their own - but Liverpool’s reported interest has now come with the endorsement of a top source.
Paul Joyce writing in the Times has got the inside track on all comings and goings at Anfield - and he has disclosed that Jacquet is a Reds’ centre-back target for the summer.
“Rennes’ Jérémy Jacquet, 20, is under consideration,” his report reads.
You can take it for a fact that this isn’t a throwaway transfer snippet. It’s a clear indication that Liverpool are right on the trail of the France under-21 international.
