Clément Lenglet has emerged as a possible Benfica target to replace Nicolás Otamendi, with ABC reporting he could leave Atlético de Madrid for the Luz this summer.

The France international is said to fit the profile sought by Benfica’s hierarchy, left footed and experienced at the top level.

Aged 31, Lenglet is under contract at Atlético de Madrid until 2028 and has played for Nancy, Sevilla, Barcelona, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

He featured in 24 matches last season and registered one assist.

Even so, Milan Skriniar continues to be viewed as the leading candidate to strengthen Marco Silva’s defence.

The club have already secured an experienced centre-back, although the identity remains undisclosed after Saturday’s General Assembly.

José María Giménez has been ruled out, leaving Skriniar, currently at Fenerbahçe, under consideration for the vacancy in central defence.
