RED BULL ARENA, LEIPZIG (Bulinews): Bayern Munich came from behind to defeat a wasteful RB Leipzig side 5-1 in the Bundesliga at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday.
The home side started brightly, coming close twice in the opening minutes. Christoph Baumgartner sent a shot narrowly wide before Manuel Neuer was forced into a save by Rômulo.
Seven minutes in, Yan Diomande drove towards the byline and cut the ball across goal for Antonio Nusa, who was unable to keep his close-range effort on target under heavy pressure from Hiroki Ito.
Bayern registered their first shot on goal in the 10th minute when a short corner found Luis Diaz, who unleashed a powerful strike from just outside the box, only for Peter Gulacsi to parry it away.
Shortly after, Lennart Karl was sent racing in behind the Leipzig defence on the counter, but the Bayern youngster was unable to find Diaz with his pass across goal.
As the first half wore on, Leipzig continued to trouble the champions, and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 21st minute. David Raum delivered a precise cross to Rômulo, who met it at the near post to put the home side ahead.
RB Leipzig went into the break with the lead, but Bayern were quick to respond after the restart. Dayot Upamecano raced forward and dispossessed Christoph Baumgartner, leaving Serge Gnabry one-on-one with Peter Gulacsi. The German international kept his cool and slotted the ball home from a tight angle to make it 1-1.
Bayern went on search for another goal, with both second-half substitute Michael Olise and Luis Diaz testing Peter Gulacsi within a couple of minutes.
But Leipzig fought back, and Rômulo came close to scoring his second goal of the evening when he made a powerful attempt in the 65th minute that Manuel Neuer did well to keep out.
Instead, Bayern went up the other end of the pitch to take the lead through Harry Kane. The English marskman collected a pass from Olise and unleashed a shot that Peter Gulacsi just couldn't keep out.
Leipzig nearly produced an instant response, as Yan Diomande raced in behind the Bayern defence on the right, but Neuer produced another fine save to preserve the lead.
Bayern then effectively put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute, when Jonathan Tah rose highest to head in Michael Olise's corner and make it 3-1.
The visitors weren’t finished there, though, as Aleksandar Pavlovic added a fourth a few minutes later, with Olise once again the provider.
Bayern’s evening got even better with the long-awaited injury return of Jamal Musiala, who assisted Olise to complete the 5-1 rout.
With the win, Bayern sit 11 points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga. RB Leipzig are fourth, a point behind Hoffenheim, who moved into third with a victory over Bayer Leverkusen earlier on Saturday.
