Club Brugge have announced that Clinton Mata has signed a new contract with the club until 2026. The 29 year-old Angolan defender follows in the footsteps of other senior players such as Hans Vanaken, Simon Mignolet and Brandon Mechele in extending their contracts with the reigning champions.
The former KRC Genk and KAS Eupen defender signed for Club Brugge from RSC Charleroi in the summer of 2018 and has gone on to win three titles and two super cups.
Rumours were going around during the summer of 2022 that Mata was set to cross the border to join former Club Brugge manager Phillipe Clement in Monaco. However, the new contract appears to signal an end to this rumour as Mata looks set to stay in Brugge for the foreseeable future.
Club Brugge currently sit in third place in the Pro League following a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Westerlo. Mata returned to the starting line up following an ankle injury that kept him out for five matches.
