Leeds United are set to miss out on defensive target Jannik Schuster, with Brentford having an agreement in principle to sign him from Red Bull Salzburg.

Daniel Farke’s side have secured Premier League football for another season, but will need to strengthen in the summer in order to not stand still.

Former winger Aaron Lennon has tipped Leeds to spend big in the summer, but feels the need to find the right players.

A lot of names have been doing the rounds, among whom is Red Bull Salzburg’s teenage defender Schuster, with Leeds suggested to be keen.

Standing at six feet three inches, Schuster fits Daniel Farke’s criteria of signing tall players with a strong physical presence.

However, Schuster is set to be off the market, with Brentford having reacted quickly in the race for his signature.

According to Sky Austria, Brentford have an agreement in principle for the defender and will pay a package of over €20m, with the deal now ‘close’.

It is believed that the project offered by Keith Andrews’ team appealed to the teenage defender the most.

While offering young players a platform to step up to the top level, Brentford can also potentially give Schuster the opportunity to play European football.

The news could well come as a blow for Leeds, who have also been in the mix for Union Berlin defender Danilho Doekhi.

Leeds are likely to sign at least one more centre-back in the summer, with Farke sometimes needing to use full-back James Justin in the role.

There are also question marks over the future of one of Leeds’ current defenders, Sebastiaan Bornauw, who has been linked with a move back to Germany.

The summer signing has found his chances limited at Elland Road, but his manager has revealed that Bornauw was aware initially that he could serve as a backup option within the squad.

All eyes will be on how quickly Brentford can now get the deal for Schuster, who was also wanted by Como, over the line.
