Club America made history on Saturday night, triumphing 7-0 over Cruz Azul to mark the biggest victory over their rival.
Richard Sanchez kicked off the scoring at the Azteca Stadium in the 14th minute, paving the way for Jonathan ‘Cabecita’ Rodriguez, Diego Valdes, Henry Martin, Alvaro Fidalgo, Federico Viñas and Salvador Reyes to follow with one of their own.
Viñas’ 89th minute strike ended his goal drought that dated back to April 9th, while the rocket from Henry Martin in the second half makes him the league’s top scorer at the moment.
"This type of match does not happen every day, the years I've been at the club, whether in the first division or in the basic forces, I don't remember a score like this, it's a good day for Americanism, for the club's archives,” said club captain and goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa after the match.
"A night that we owed [to the fans] against a rival that has always been difficult, that is always difficult, the way to respect the rival is to play seriously with humility and today we never relax.”
The victory against Cruz Azul marked the end of a successful week for Club America. The team won all three of their matches, scoring 13 goals in favor and conceding zero to maintain a strong hold of fourth place in the Liga MX table.
After a shaky start to the 2022 Apertura campaign, Club America is back on track.
"I think everyone is excited about the performance of this team in the last three, four games. You have to keep your feet on the ground, we all allow ourselves to enjoy at least a few hours because it is something historic that the boys have achieved, I am happy to coach the best institution in Mexico and that is a source of pride for me," said head coach Fernando Ortiz.
"Each match is a final in the way that they play against America and we assume the role that we have as the best team in Mexico. Being calm is one of the keys that I tell my players, they have to regenerate and prepare for the game of Querétaro.”
