According to Het Nieuwsblad, Club Brugge are considering the return of Mathew Ryan to the club. The former Brighton goalkeeper is currently at the World Cup with Australia but is a free agent this summer. The 34-year-old has played for the club previously so could be open to a return to Belgium. Former Brighton man Ryan is not the only goalkeeper that Club Brugge are talking to this summer, with experienced Swiss international Yan Sommer also one of their other options. With Simon Mignolet having retired, Club Brugge are on the hunt for an experienced goalkeeper to fill the void.

Club Brugge were the first team that the Australian Ryan played for in Europe. After coming through at Central Coast Mariners, Ryan joined Club Brugge on a free in 2013. He went on to play 102 games for the side before leaving to join Valencia in 2015. The move did not go as well as Ryan had hoped, with a loan spell to Genk during the 2016/2017 season. In 2017 he left La Liga to sign for Brighton. Ryan went on to play 123 games for Brighton between 2017 and 2021, with a brief spell on loan at Arsenal.

Since leaving Brighton in 2021 Ryan has played for Real Sociedad, FC Copenhagen, AZ Alkmaar, Roma, Lens and most recently Levante. Last season Ryan played 36 games for Levante in La Liga.

Clearly Club Brugge want to bring in a veteran goalkeeper and will have to decide who suits their future plans better, Sommer or Ryan.
