It could go down as the most seismic transfer in the club’s history and make no mistake - Liverpool have signed the very best talent that Germany has to offer.
This is no up-and-comer; Richard Hughes is not signing Wirtz for his potential. He is being acquired based on his world-class status.
And if you’re in any doubt about how good Wirtz, just read these words from Hans-Joachim Watzke. The 65-year-old former president of Borussia Dortmund regrets that German football is LOSING Wirtz.
In fact, he is so upset about it that he would have rathered Wirtz joining Bayern.

"Especially for the DFL, it's a real shame that a player like Florian Wirtz is leaving the Bundesliga,” Watzke said in an interview with Kicker, as reported by Sky Sport Germany.
“I wouldn't have had a problem at all if he had gone to FC Bayern. That would have been better for the Bundesliga."
It had been suggested that the presence of international teammate Jamal Musiala in the Allianz Arena might have been enough to persuade Wirtz to move to Bavaria.
But that wouldn’t keep him away from Liverpool - with the Reds coach Slot having successfully pitched for Wirtz to join.

“[He] will also play at the highest level in Liverpool,” said Watzke.
“He could have played better with Musiala in Munich, but two such good footballers find each other anyway.
"We can simply be very, very happy that we have two truly world-class players in such a central position.
"The task of Julian Nagelsmann is then to position the two on the field in such a way that it works really well."
So to recap. The former president of Dortmund says it’s such a shame for German football to lose Wirtz that he wanted him to join Bayern - a direct Bundesliga rival.
