Wycombe Wanderers first-team coach Alex Morris was unhappy with key decisions that he felt went Sheffield Wednesday’s way in the Owls’ 2-1 win on Tuesday night.

Henrik Pedersen’s side had gone behind to a Cauley Woodrow goal, but they equalised shortly after through Louie Barry and Jamal Lowe scored what turned out to be the winner just before half-time after a controversial penalty was awardded.

That made it three wins from four for Wednesday, who have started the campaign very well when you consider the major squad overhaul that took place throughout the summer window.

However, it’s fair to say there were some big talking points from Wednesday’s victory at Adams Park.

The hosts were unhappy with the penalty call, as Callum Slattery appeared to be on his way down, whilst the contact was minimal. Plus, they felt they should’ve had a penalty of their own for a handball from Gabriel Otegbayo.

Wycombe boss Michael Duff was sent off for making his feelings clear to the referee, and, speaking to the Bucks Free Press, first-team coach Morris explained why they felt so aggrieved.

“I don't think we deserved to lose the game. There were decisions within the game, and I'm loath to make reference to them, but they were deciding factors in the game.

"We should have had a penalty with the blatant handball in the second half. And the penalty that was given to Sheffield Wednesday just wasn't a penalty. It's as simple as that. And those are game-defining moments that have ultimately led to the scoreline that we've got.

“He (Callum Slattery) is on his way down before he even gets close to Cauley. He doesn't make any contact with him. We have a definite penalty when Caolan (Boyd-Munce) shoots. I think it was (Gabriel) Otegbayo who saved it with his hands. He literally dived and saved the ball and produced an action that a goalkeeper would produce. How that's not been picked up and seen, I don't know.”

It did look as though Sheffield Wednesday had the rub of the green in terms of the decisions against the Chairboys, so you can understand why they’re frustrated.

But, ultimately, the Owls won’t care, and the team deserves credit for coming from behind at a difficult ground to pick up all three points.

We know that decisions go for and against every team over the course of the season, and it’s about reacting and adapting to the game.

For Wednesday, that win was a big one after the 7-2 thrashing of Bromley, where they displayed so much attacking talent and highlighted just how dangerous they could be.

Yet, if you are going to win promotion, you must be able to grind out results and that’s exactly what they did against Wycombe, so, in a way, it might actually please Pedersen more as he had to see a different side to his team.

Given the number of new faces in the squad, winning in this manner will only help build a unity and spirit that will be crucial if the Yorkshire outfit are to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt.

So, it’s been a positive start to the season for Sheffield Wednesday, and they will look to build more momentum when they face Peterborough United this weekend.
