Cody Gakpo was overcome with emotion after scoring for the Netherlands against Morocco at the World Cup, two days after a family tragedy.

He lay on the turf for several seconds as team-mates surrounded him, then rose with his face hidden by his shirt. He was in tears.

According to L'Équipe, he had learned that his child had died during his partner's pregnancy.

The Liverpool player chose to remain with the national squad for this World Cup.

As he returned to his half, the attacking midfielder pointed to the sky with his fingers, thinking of his child who died before birth.
