Sam Coffey is the latest US name to join an illustrious list of American talent who have represented City.

The midfielder joins the Club on a deal until the summer of 2029 from Portland Thorns, her move outside of her native United States of America.

A key figure for her nation, Coffey becomes the sixth player in our professional era to hail from across the pond, and the first since 2021.

Below is a quick rundown of the five Americans who preceded her at the Joie Stadium, including free-scoring midfielders, title-winners and one of the game’s most famous forwards…

Daphne Corboz

Our first-ever professional player from the United States, midfielder Corboz joined City the Georgetown Hoyas in the summer of 2015.

She was part of our WSL title-winning squad the following season and also helped the Blues win the League Cup during her stay at the Joie Stadium.

An all-action midfielder, Corboz made 31 appearances and scored four goals before returning to the states in January 2017 with New York based Sky Blue FC, now known as Gotham FC.

Corboz returned to the Joie Stadium with Paris FC in last season’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers and has been with the French outfit since 2020.

Carli Lloyd

An undisputed icon of the game, Lloyd’s stint at City might have been brief but it was certainly memorable.

The 2015 World Cup winner moved to the Joie Stadium for the 2017 Spring Series, designed as a mini tournament ahead of the WSL’s transition to a September-May model later that year.

Lloyd went on to feature 12 times in all competitions and scored four goals, including in a Champions League semi-final against the all-conquering Lyon side of the late 2010s.

However, her crowning moment in Blue came at Wembley, with the US star getting on the scoresheet in a 4-1 FA Cup final win over Birmingham City.

Sam Mewis

With 16 goals in 32 matches across her solitary campaign in Manchester, Mewis has rightly gone down as one of City’s most popular figures even if her time at the Club was short.

An August 2020 signing from North Carolina Courage, Mewis adapted to the cut and thrust of English football like a duck to water, with her excellent attacking instincts complemented by a unique physical prowess.

It’s clear to see why the midfielder was dubbed ‘the tower of power’, and her goalscoring displays earned her a spot in the PFA WSL Team of the Year for 2020/21.

She moved back to North Carolina Courage at the end of the season but helped the Blues lift the FA Cup in November 2020, scoring against Everton in the final at Wembley.

Rose Lavelle

Eight days after Mewis’ move to City, fellow US international midfielder Lavelle made the move from Washington Spirit.

Another supremely talented and technical midfielder, Lavelle grabbed five goals in 26 appearances and was part of our 2020 FA Cup-winning team.

She returned to OL Reign, now Seattle Reign FC, at the end of the campaign, and remains an international team-mate of Sam Coffey, our latest US star!

Abby Dahlkemper

Dahlkemper became our third US star in the 2020/21 campaign when she joined City from North Carolina Courage in the winter transfer window.

She featured 13 times in all competitions across a six-month stint, before returning to the States with Houston Dash in in August 2021.

A composed and classy centre-half, Dahlkemper’s ability on the ball and excellent reading of the game made her an excellent fit for City in her brief stint.
