Colombia and tournament newcomers Uzbekistan will begin their World Cup campaign with a Group K match on Thursday at Mexico City Stadium.
Colombia arrives with strong momentum. They finished third in a competitive South American qualifying group but had a slight dip in March, losing friendly matches against Croatia and France.
Nestor Lorenzo’s side responded well in June, beating Costa Rica 3–1 and then securing a comfortable 2–0 win over Jordan to close their preparations.
They are in Group K in the FIFA World Cup along with Uzbekistan, Portugal, and DR Congo.
Manager Nestor Lorenzo has the benefit of a fully fit squad heading into the opener, with no major injury concerns.
Captain James Rodriguez is ready to lead after recovering completely from a serious dehydration issue in April.
Striker Jhon Cordoba is also fit and available after successfully managing a minor tendon problem.
Colombia is expected to stick with its attacking style of play. Camilo Vargas will start in goal, supported by a reliable back four that includes Jhon Lucumi and Davinson Sanchez.
In attack, Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz will bring pace and creativity from the flank. He will combine with Rodriguez and Jhon Arias to support striker Luis Suarez.
Possible Colombia starting XI: Vargas; Munoz, Sanchez, Lucumi, Mojica; Lerma, Rios; Arias, Rodriguez, Diaz; Suarez
The match will kick off at 3am BST on Thursday, 18th June.
