The Colorado Rapids have announced the recall of midfielder Cole Bassett from his loan to Dutch side Fortuna Sittard.
Bassett originally moved to the Netherlands with Feyenoord back in January but after struggling for regular appearances, was instead switched to Fortuna in August.
For the two clubs combined, Bassett made 19 appearances, scoring once and providing one assist.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Cole back home to Colorado,” Rapids executive vice president and general manager Pádraig Smith said in a club press release. “We all know the caliber of player he is, and given his obvious familiarity with our club and the league, we believe he can be a key contributor as we make a push to return to the playoffs in 2023.”
Despite his struggles in the Netherlands, Bassett has a proven track record in MLS having previously registered 13 goals and nine assists in 75 appearances for the Rapids across all competitions. At just 21 years old, the one-time United States international has time on his side and remains an exciting prospect for the future.
Now, he'll look to use his talent to help push the Rapids back above the Playoffs line after finishing 10th in the Western Conference in 2022.
“I couldn’t be more excited to return home and to a club I’ve loved my entire life,” said Bassett. “I know we can achieve great things together next season and I can’t wait to play in front of our fans once again at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.”
Although both club and player appear to be planning for life together in 2023, it should be noted that Feyenoord still hold the option to purchase Bassett under the terms of their original agreement. That option must be exercised by March.
