Manchester United left it late to continue Michael Carrick’s unbeaten run as head coach, but found an injury-time equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw at West Ham.
Benjamin Sesko’s deft flick was the crucial moment for the Red Devils, but despite long stretches of mediocrity there were some credible performances elsewhere on the pitch.
Casemiro continued his run of fine form even as those around him regressed, and was once again a key figure for United in the middle of the park.
The lion-hearted Brazilian dived into the most duels of any United player and won more than anyone else on either team.
Casemiro won five of seven contested ground duels, and came out on top in three of five aerial duels.
Marauding forward from midfield he was caught offside twice, once as he headed home what looked like an equaliser in the second half.
The 33-year-old didn’t take any shots tonight and had to dig in in his own half instead as a nonplussed United struggled to deal with a well-organised West Ham.
Casemiro won four tackles – more than any of his teammates – and made one clearance, one blocked shot and one interception to top his team’s defensive actions charts.
He took the second-most touches with 91, behind Lisandro Martinez on 118, but wasn’t as accurate with his passing as he has been in recent times.
The Brazilian found his man with 81% of his passes, 54 of his attempted 67 being accurate. All three of his crosses missed their target, and only one of four long balls reached its intended recipient.
It was in large part a disappointing display, but United showed resilience to find an equaliser and could have had more had they had the rub of the green.
Casemiro is currently one of the first names on a teamsheet which Carrick is reluctant to change, and is sure to start away to Everton.
