Columbus Crew acquire help as season gets into full swing

It's been about as good a start as you can ask from the Crew as they've opened the season with two wins, one of them being on the road against a motivated rival. Yet here we are, already discussing the stress of depth as their CONCACAF Champions Cup run is set to begin tonight against what seems like new rival LAFC. Tonight's game will be their second in four days, with their upcoming home match on Saturday being their third in seven days. Columbus knew they'd need to add depth at some point, but the reality of the current schedule marks it as urgent. As a result they've dipped into the free agent market to sign MLS veteran Midfielder Amar Sejdić. Let's dive into what to expect from this signing.

  1. Drafted in the second round (pick 34) by CF Montréal in 2019 where he would've been coached by Wilfried Nancy. Scored 3 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions for the senior team
  1. Traded to Atlanta United in the Summer of the 2021 season where he made 56 appearances recording 3 assists across two and a half seasons (2021-2023).
  1. Signed a one year deal with Nashville SC in 2024 where he made 17 appearances

Sejdić has familiarity with Nancy's style of play from their time in Montreal, and is now the second such player the Crew have brought in as recent signings (Lassi Lappalainen) to help bolster depth. It's a low risk move and one that can help ease the burden on starters Darlington Nagbe and Sean Zawadzki as the crunch of the schedule could start to grind on players.

General Manager Issa Tall stated, "Amar’s technical characteristics will offer greater tactical flexibility to our midfield group."

While this signing may not move the needle on a grand scale, it's a move that had to be made as the schedule is already becoming demanding on the players. Sejdić is a fine depth piece and it feels like that's all that will be asked of him. I'd suspect we'd see Amar make his debut much sooner than later.
