The possibility of making history in the Champions League by securing yet another trophy for their extensive collection might have eclipsed Real Madrid’s domestic achievements.

Success in the Champions League understandably garners the most attention as the competition is considered the pinnacle of club football.

However, the Merengues’ consistent dominance in La Liga serves as a testament to the club’s quality and consistency throughout the campaign.

And their victory in La Liga is made even more impressive by the fact that they sealed the title with a fair amount of games still left to spare.

Toni Kroos recently joined his brother Felix on their podcast “Einfach mal Luppen” to discuss his experiences during the weekend when Real Madrid clinched the La Liga title.

Barcelona defeat was the cherry on top

Barcelona’s unexpected 4-2 loss to Girona sealed the deal for Real Madrid, who had defeated Cadiz 3-0 a few hours ago to win the title.

While Kroos appreciated that Barcelona’s loss contributed to Real Madrid’s victory, he had conflicting emotions about celebrating the trophy at home as opposed to on the pitch.

“We won our game and, when Barcelona went 2-1 up, I was going to go home, but everyone told me to stay. 5 minutes later they lost 4-2. We were all eating hot dogs. Not leaving was a great decision,” he said (h/t AS).

“It was pretty crazy because Girona could also have taken a 7-2 lead. We celebrated a little bit, but not too much either,” the German midfielder added.

Kroos highlighted the effort required to win La Liga and felt proud of the title, despite it being predictable, which reduced some of the excitement.

Still, the 34-year-old found the combination of Real Madrid’s win and Barcelona’s loss to be a source of extra satisfaction.

“It is once again the feeling of having achieved something great. However, the season was so clear that he took some of the emotion out of it at the end.

“I’m very happy to have achieved it, in the end you make all those trips over the course of a year and you keep returning home late. You do everything for the sole objective of being champions.

“It is clear that, if I had been able to paint it, I would have preferred not to experience it in front of a TV. But it doesn’t matter, combining it with a Barça defeat was doubly good. Hence we accepted it as it happened,” he remarked.
