Cesc Fabregas had the chance to succeed Simone Inzaghi on the Inter bench, but that ship has likely sailed for good, considering Christian Chivu’s satisfactory start. President Giuseppe Marotta recently said that the gaffer would remain in charge for years.
According to Corriere della Sera, the Spanish manager is likely poised to leave Serie A once his run at Como is over. His preference would be to take over Barcelona or Manchester City next. He’ll obviously have to wait for the end of Hans-Dieter Flick or Pep Guardiola’s tenures.
Inter were the last team to try to poach Fabregas last summer after Bayer Leverkusen and Roma attempted in vain. During a trip to London to attend an event along with Como president Mirwan Suwarso, he made time to meet with Nerazzurri director Piero Ausilio. It was a preliminary chat rather than a real negotiation.
The up-and-comer suggested he’d like to overhaul the squad and realized that his suitors weren’t thrilled by such a proposition. Both parties were on the fence about joining forces. The manager didn’t force his way out, and there wasn’t a follow-up summit.
The Lariani had the best defense and the highest possession rate in the League going into Saturday’s clash. In the end, the most prolific attack got the better of them in dominating fashion.
He’ll obviously need to earn those jobs, but he surely has fans in Europe. The last match marked the first time he was truly humbled by his overly ambitious strategy. Inter are surely pleased with their choice. In hindsight, he would have probably struggled to impose a new tactic and playing style in such a veteran locker room.
