Como sneaked into the top four in the last round, stunningly leapfrogging Milan, which faltered against Cagliari, Roma held serve against Hellas Verona, while Juventus needed almost a miracle to make it. The delayed start of the Derby della Mole due to public order problems rendered its result moot.
As Calciomercato points out, it’s the first time that Old Lady and the Rossoneri both fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League since its format change back in 1992/1993. Instead, the capital club ends a seven-year hiatus, while the Lariani will obviously participate for the first time, as they spent most of their history in the lower divisions.
The demise of Juventus and Milan marked the end of two lengthy streaks, Tuttomercatoweb relays. The Bianconeri hadn’t finished this low in the standings in 15 seasons. Their previous absence was caused by a point deduction stemming from the ‘plusvalenze’ scandal.
Instead, Massimiliano Allegri will miss out on a UEFA Champions League berth for the first time since he’s been helming a team vying for it, which has been the case since 2010. Conversely, Como are the first Serie A team to access it without a single goal scored by an Italian player. They have only a couple of them in their squad, and no regulars.
In the end, the two most deserving sides punched their ticket, given their recent form and seasons in general. The Rossoneri’s collapse was still shocking for how it came to be, while the Old Lady had thrown away the qualification in previous fixtures. Both should seize the opportunity for drastic changes to their hierarchy, MO, and squad.
