Concern creeping in at Barcelona surrounding the form of defensive duo | OneFootball

Barcelona have been far from their usual best this season, especially from a defensive point of view.

Much of the blame has been laid on the central defenders and the stability they have lacked following Inigo Martinez’s summer exit. That is why Barcelona have identified multiple options in the market, in their attempt to replace Martinez.

However, Barcelona are also aware that fullbacks have struggled to produce the goods as well, with concerns creeping in over the performances of two players, in particular.

Barcelona concerned about Kounde and Balde

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are expecting more from their fullback duo of Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde.

Both players performed extremely well in Hansi Flick’s debut season at Barcelona, providing strength and stability in the wider defensive roles.

But they have not been performing at par this time around, and within the club, there is significant concern surrounding their dropping performance levels.

Kounde, for one, has been struggling this season. He hasn’t shown anything going forward and has been less solid defensively, prompting Hansi Flick to count on Eric Garcia from time to time.

Balde, too, hasn’t been performing as good as he did last season. The youngster notably suffered from an injury in September and missed five matches – something that did not work in his favour.

In the eleven matches he has played this season, Balde has picked up two assists and won a penalty, which was missed by Robert Lewandowski against Sevilla.

For Barcelona, Balde’s drop in performance is more concerning, as the club lack the services of a reliable alternative. Gerard Martin has done well but hasn’t done enough to truly compete with Balde.

Barcelona, therefore, are expecting their fullback to turn up the heat after the international break, as the club gear up for an important phase of the season.
