Barnsley are set to face further budget cuts ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Barnsley have endured a disappointing season in League One, which has left them with little to play for in their final nine matches this season.

The Tykes were relegated from the Championship back in 2022, and have faced four consecutive seasons in the third tier of English football, which looks set to become five next term.

Despite boasting one of the highest incomes from player sales in League One over the last few years, their ownership structure headed by chairman Neerav Parekh has faced criticism for the lack of reinvestment in the playing squad from these sales.

Head coach Conor Hourihane is now seemingly fighting with one hand tied behind his back due to the lack of backing from the board, and a fresh report has suggested things may not get any easier for him next season.

The frustration at the transfer business Barnsley have completed over the last few windows has been palpable.

Replacing talisman Davis Keillor-Dunn with a loanee in Tom Bradshaw in January sparked outrage, as supporters felt the club had settled with the cheap option, rather than reinvest some of the striker's fee into a long-term replacement.

The focus will soon shift to next season, and whether they can improve on a mid-table finish, but reports suggest Hourihane's task won't be made any easier.

According to journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon Page on Sunday morning, the Barnsley board will make further budget cuts heading into next season, which could see them struggle even further.

Nixon has suggested that the club's budget may fall as low as £3.5m, which would be one of the lowest in the third tier, making Hourihane's already difficult task to help the team progress even harder.

The Irishman has previously made comments about the financial situation at Oakwell, where he admitted he expected the challenges to be the same next season, but this revelation could make it even harder for the ex-midfielder to bring success.

More financial frustration on the horizon for BarnsleyFollowing the release of their accounts for the previous financial year, it's clear to see that the reinvestment in the playing squad has taken a nosedive due to the lack of sales in that particular period, which has left Hourihane in a rather difficult situation.

The club certainly has the stature to play at a higher level, but the budget to get there simply isn't being provided, which has led to serious tension around Oakwell, with supporters extremely unhappy at the current state of their club.

The blame for the Tykes' struggles has been placed on their 'mid-table budget' and failure in finding a replacement for Keillor-Dunn, which Hourihane clearly wanted before the winter transfer window concluded.

Barnsley do have valuable assets, such as Reyes Cleary, who will likely have plenty of potential suitors in the summer, but with the lack of reinvestment from player sales over the years, this is hardly any crumb of comfort for anyone at the club.

Next season could be a slog for the South Yorkshire side if Nixon's reports come to fruition, and with tension between the fans, players, staff and board already at an all-time high, the situation looks to be heading in a dire direction.
