Confederation of African Football set to invest in coaching badges for prisoners in Ghana

The CAF have outlined the next stage of their ‘Football for Reform’ programme. The programme will run in collaboration with the Ghanaian FA Foundation. It will see training for coaching badges delivered to female prisoners in the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in Ghana.

The programme’s main aim is to invest in the future of women who are currently in prison as they look to reintegrate into Ghanaian society. By the end of the programme, those who take part can utilize their accredited coaching qualifications to improve their employability.

Football for Reform aims to underline the transformative power of football as a tool for social change and rehabilitation. A total of 30 participants will participate in the program, earning their coaching badges with CAF-accredited coaching qualifications. Five prison guards will also participate in the programme to promote integration and participation.

Head of women’s football at the CAF, Meskerem Goshime, emphasised the program’s objective of empowering women through football coaching education. Equipping them with essential skills for their future whilst advancing gender equality and social rehabilitation.

“We are thrilled to offer the Ghana Football Association the opportunity to host the CAF Football for Reform Program,” she told the media.

Ghanaian FA continues its trend of prisoner rehabilitation

In 2022, the Ghana Football Association provided a wealth of equipment and resources to the Ghanian Prison Service Women’s Department to show the transformative properties of sport. Toiletries, computers, printers and food were also provided at the time.

Major General Nicholas Peter Andoh of the Ghanaian prison service stated, “The purpose of the donation was to reinforce the notion to the women that Ghanaian society is thoughtful of them.” He added, “I’m hopeful that upon their discharge, they will be assimilated into the society with added value, to contribute meaningfully to society.”
