Barcelona have learnt who they will face in the 2027 Spanish Super Cup semi-final, and it will be far more than a routine encounter.
Hansi Flick’s side have been paired with Atletico Madrid, giving Barça an opponent with whom tensions are running high.
Istanbul will host the Super Cup from 2 to 6 February after the Spanish Football Federation finalised the agreement.
Barcelona face Atletico on 2 February at Fenerbahce’s Chobani Stadium, while Real Madrid meet Real Sociedad the following day.
There is already enough history between Barcelona and Atletico to make this much more interesting than usual.
The clubs have repeatedly locked horns in the transfer market in recent seasons, and the relationship between them has not always been straightforward.
From Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix in previous years to Barcelona’s more recent interest in Julian Alvarez, there has rarely been a shortage of fireworks.
That adds another layer to February’s meeting. Atletico are direct domestic rivals and will have no interest in allowing Barça an easy route towards the first trophy of 2027.
For Flick, it also presents the kind of test that can reveal plenty about his team. Atletico knocked them out in both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League last year.
Facing them again this season and winning a huge knockout tie would be a shot in the arm for the Catalan club.
Should Barça progress, the final will be held at Galatasaray’s Ali Sami Yen Stadium, with around 52,000 seats. Real Madrid or Real Sociedad would provide the opposition.
Naturally, the possibility of another Clasico final will attract attention. However, from a Barcelona perspective, looking beyond Atletico would be dangerous.

The Super Cup format rewards teams that arrive sharp rather than those who simply look strongest on paper.
With the competition taking place in February, Flick will also have to manage it alongside Barça’s La Liga and Champions League commitments.
Istanbul replaces Saudi Arabia, which cannot host the 2027 tournament because of its Asian Cup commitments. Three different stadiums across the city will be used.
A victory over Atletico would bring Barça within one match of silverware, potentially against Real Madrid. Having repeated the Spanish Super Cup, they will be looking to make it three in a row.
February is still months away, but Barcelona already know when their first trophy opportunity of 2027 comes, and it remains to be seen how things play out until then.
