Confirmed: Barcelona working to sign new central defender

Barcelona are set for a busy end to the summer transfer window, with the possibility of multiple new signings being made before next week’s deadline. Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri and Joao Cancelo have already arrived, but the club is clear that more is needed before Hansi Flick’s squad for the 2026-27 season is complete.

A new striker to replace the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres has been the top priority for the entire summer, but with Julian Alvarez still not able to be signed, Barcelona have started considering other options – not in the centre forward position, but rather, they are looking at other areas of Flick’s squad.

Prior to the summer, Barcelona showed a lot of interest in signing a central defender. Their lack of experience in the back-line cost them in the Champions League, although a move was quickly put on the backburners due to the desire to add forward players – although they have now circled back. Matteo Moretto has told DAZN that the Catalans are planning to sign a new centre-back before the transfer window closes next week. He did not name the player, although he revealed that they “do not play in Spain, and he’s not very well-known”.

Who will Barcelona bring in?

The fact that an unknown name is being touted would suggest that Barcelona are not signing a starter. Among others, they have been linked with Castello Lukeba and Aymeric Laporte in recent weeks, although neither fits the criteria that is being mentioned – especially the latter, given that he’s currently playing in Spain with Athletic Club.
