Ipswich Town and Birmingham City have both been punished by the FA following their 1-1 draw in August
Birmingham City and Ipswich Town have both been fined by the Football Association for failing to control their players during their 1-1 draw on the opening day of the Championship season.
A late stoppage time penalty from the Tractor Boys sealed a point after the Blues had initially taken the lead through Jay Stansfield early in the second half.
This was Birmingham’s first game back in the Championship after gaining promotion from League One, while Kieran McKenna’s side returned to the division due to relegation from the Premier League.
Tempers flared in the final moments of the game following the conversion of Ipswich’s penalty by George Hirst.
Supporters and players were disappointed with the awarding of a penalty for hand ball by Lydon Dykes while defending a corner, with Christoph Klarer engaging Conor Chaplin in the initial conflict.
It has been confirmed by the FA that both clubs have been handed a fine as determined by an Independent Regulatory Commission.
The Blues have been warned, along with a punishment worth £100,000 for their role in the incident on 8 August.
Meanwhile, the Suffolk outfit have been fined £24,000 by the FA, with a warning also given to the club after a hearing.
The FA alleged that the two Championship sides failed to ensure their players behaved in a proper way, which both Ipswich and Birmingham accepted.
While the two clubs can appeal, it’s unlikely that this will be the case given they have both accepted the fines and warning.
It has been a busy start to the new season for Ipswich and hearings, as their fixture against Blackburn Rovers also required a decision from the EFL before determining whether or not to replay from the start after it was abandoned after 80 minutes due to heavy rain.
There was a lot of emotion from both teams on the opening day of the season, as the two teams knew the importance of a positive start to life back at this level.
It’s no surprise that the FA have taken action, but the two clubs will know that their players can’t behave like that again this season.
It was also a late penalty that prompted the incident, which is always going to have players on edge, especially with Birmingham missing out on a big win at home.
The £100,000 fine is quite big in comparison to Ipswich’s £24,000, but also the cost shouldn’t be a problem for either team, and they’ve accepted the charges.
