A scandal is rocking the Republic of the Congo. In a press release issued on February 27, the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT) announced the arrest of two of its members.

According to the FECOFOOT statement, the incident occurred at 5 a.m. on February 27. The Secretary General, Badji Mombo Wantete, and the Head of Finance, Raoul Kanda, were both arrested at their respective homes.

The Congolese Football Federation denounced what it called a "disproportionate intervention" and a "lack of respect for human dignity." The federation emphasized that the two officials had responded to summonses from the Congolese judiciary. FECOFOOT demanded guarantees for the men's physical safety and called for a fair trial. FIFA and CAF have also been notified of the developments.

What are the reasons?

The Congolese Football Federation did not name those who carried out the arrests or specify their motivations. For the record, the two men are reportedly facing allegations of embezzlement. In the same case, at the beginning of February, the federation president, Guy Blaise Mayolas, was referred to the Brazzaville criminal court on similar charges.
