The federation announced that Uruguayan referee Andrés Matonte will oversee Flamengo’s decisive Copa Libertadores quarter-final second leg against Independiente del Valle on Thursday 17.
Antonio Garcia, also from Uruguay, will run VAR. Kick-off is 21:30 Brasília time at the Maracanã.
Matonte has refereed three Flamengo matches. In the 2023 Recopa second leg, Flamengo beat Independiente del Valle 1-0 to level the tie, then lost 5-4 on penalties and finished runners-up.
He took charge in the 2024 group stage when Flamengo defeated Bolívar 4-0 at the Maracanã. This season he also refereed the 4-1 win over Independiente Medellín at the same venue, leaving his record with Flamengo strongly favourable.
Flamengo won the first leg 2-0 at altitude in Quito, so they can afford to lose by one and still reach the semi-finals. A defeat by two or more goals would take the tie to penalties. The winners face Corinthians or Estudiantes.
The match will be shown live on ESPN’s subscription channel and on Disney+ via streaming. Coluna do Fla will provide live reactions during the 90 minutes.
