Conmebol has appointed Venezuelan referee Jesús Valenzuela to take charge of Independiente Medellín v Flamengo in the fourth round of the Copa Libertadores group stage on Thursday at Estadio Atanasio Girardot, kick-off 21:30 Brasília time.
According to Coluna Do Fla, assistant referees Tulio Moreno and Alberto Ponte, both Venezuelan, will run the lines, with Uruguay’s Andres Cunha overseeing VAR.
It will be the seventh Flamengo match officiated by Valenzuela. Across those games, the Rio club have four wins, one draw and one defeat.
One of those victories was a thumping of Olimpia (PAR) in the 2021 Libertadores quarter-finals. His most recent Flamengo assignment came in October 2025, a 1-0 win over Racing (ARG) at the Maracanã, when Jorge Carrascal scored in the first leg of the semi-final.
Valenzuela was also in the spotlight at the 2024 Copa América in the United States after he declined to give a first-half penalty to Vini Júnior in Brazil 1-1 Colombia in group D. Conmebol later acknowledged an on-field error in that incident.
