Sheffield United, Charlton Athletic and MK Dons should be queuing up for the services of Conor Coady following his departure from Wrexham

Wrexham and Conor Coady have agreed a mutual termination of the centre-back's contract, leaving the 33-year-old free to sign elsewhere for nothing.

Coady only made six appearances for the Red Dragons, arriving last summer from Leicester City as one of their big-name arrivals ahead of their first season back in the second tier since the early 1980s.

As Phil Parkinson realised his best eleven, though, the 33-year-old was left surplus to requirements. All five of his league appearances were the first five league games of the campaign, and his other start saw his side lose to Cardiff City in the EFL Cup.

After being loaned out to Charlton Athletic in January, the writing was on the wall, and the imminent arrival of Joe Worrall has opened up the possibility for the club to release the former Wolves man.

With the veteran available on a free transfer, these three sides should be interested in bringing him in.

Sheffield United have spent all summer, it feels, searching for a new centre-back, but as the transfer window enters its final day, there is still no sign of one signing on at Bramall Lane.

The Blades have been linked with the likes of Worrall, Harry Souttar, and a would-be-returning Anel Ahmedhodzic, but have seen themselves either priced out of a deal or beaten to by Championship rivals.

Even free agent Adam Webster now doesn't look to be signing for the Blades, despite being present at Shirecliffe last week, so Chris Wilder is back to square one when it comes to adding to his backline before the transfer window closes.

With Sheffield United not needing to spend a transfer fee on Coady, he'd present an attainable option for the South Yorkshire side.

Plus, it would present an opportunity for the 33-year-old to bookend his senior career with stints at Bramall Lane, with his first - and only - loan spell from Liverpool as an academy product coming at Sheffield United in the 2013/14 campaign.

There's little doubting that Coady was a well-liked, well-respected addition to Charlton's squad when he arrived on loan in January, as his veteran leadership helped the Addicks over the safety line to secure another year of second-tier football.

The 33-year-old showed great versatility and ability to play wherever manager Nathan Jones wanted him to play, too, playing more as a defensive midfielder than in the backline during his time at the Valley.

He netted a vital goal in a 1-0 win at the Riverside against Middlesbrough in March and captained the side on the final day in defeat against Swansea City, albeit survival had been confirmed the week before.

With the Addicks moving to a back four once again this season, there may be little room back at the club for the 33-year-old. However, with the current injury crisis that the club are facing at the back, perhaps another defender would be needed in addition to the loan arrival of Tyler Bindon.

With Coady's ability to play in midfield, and his leadership qualities that will be respected by Nathan Jones, perhaps a return wouldn't be too far out of the question.

MK Dons

Coady's next move could well end up being back to League One for the first time in well over a decade, and if he does seem to be wanted by third-tier sides more than those in the second tier, MK Dons could prove to be the best option for him.

Under Paul Warne, Milton Keynes play a back three, which would suit someone like the former Wrexham man, who has performed better in that system than he has in a back four throughout his career.

Of the options that the MK boss has in his arsenal, Curtis Nelson, Charlie Goode and Marvin Ekpiteta are all solid options; Jack Sanders is a decent backup, but outside of that, there isn't much by way of senior depth.

Warne may turn to the likes of Charlie Walker and Callum Tripp to cover if any of the aforementioned quartet get injured, but bringing Coady in on a free transfer could just add that solidity in depth throughout a long campaign.
