There has been some big news coming out of The Valley.

Charlton Athletic did well to maintain their Championship status at the first time of asking, but know that they must improve if they are to steer clear of the drop again next term.

Nathan Jones' side enjoyed a stellar start to life in the second tier, losing just three of their first 14, but faltered before Christmas and managed to claw back some wins to finish six points above the drop zone.

The Addicks' recruitment last summer was far from convincing, and the club simply must get their signings right, with the frontline in need of investment.

However, Charlton will be buoyed after the latest announcement, and Conor Coady, Miles Leaburn and Lloyd Jones are clearly also delighted.

Matty Godden celebrates special Charlton Athletic news

Matty Godden endured a rotten season in South East London after making just 11 appearances in a campaign blighted by injury.

The striker played a significant part in Charlton's rise to the Championship, notching 22 goals in all competitions the season prior, and Nathan Jones would have been banking on him to make a meaningful contribution again.

Godden's absence was clearly felt on the pitch as the Addicks managed just 44 goals in the second tier all season, with only Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers producing fewer.

However, the South London club have announced that the 34-year-old has signed a new one-year contract extension to keep him at The Valley until the summer of 2027.

The Canterbury-born man took to Instagram to share the news, saying: "Forever proud to represent this football club. After a really difficult year, it's time to make more memories," followed by a love heart emoji.

Coady reacted by stating, "This has put a smile on my face," also followed by the love heart emoji, while Jones and Leaburn also shared their joy in the comments.

Jones shared heart and raising-hand emojis followed by "ly", while Leaburn messaged "OLE OLEEE" and a fire emoji.

Can Charlton rely on Godden in the Championship?

While there is no doubting the impact Godden has had at The Valley, the obvious question is whether he still has what it takes to make an impact at Championship level.

The 34-year-old's record is certainly far superior at League One level, but he has managed some encouraging returns in the second tier with a total of 34 goals in 128 appearances.

Godden's best campaign in the Championship came in 2021/22 with Coventry City when he bagged 12 goals in 24 appearances, averaging a goal every other game.

The Addicks were pretty dire in front of goal last term, so if the forward can make any sort of impact, then it will be a huge boost for Jones' side, and it essentially feels like a new signing at The Valley.

So while Charlton will certainly need more attacking reinforcements, Godden will be an admirable option in an area the club have desperately struggled.

How Charlton Athletic fans are reacting to Godden news

Evidently, the news around Godden has gone down well with Charlton fans, who are relishing the opportunity of a fit and firing forward back within their ranks.

One supporter also highlighted the reason why the contract extension will mean so much to the 34-year-old.
