Conor Dunne has left his role in Sunderland’s academy amid continued backroom changes, he said in a LinkedIn post. He described his time on Wearside as an “incredible period”.
The Academy Physical Performance Coach, who relocated from Ireland, worked across multiple age groups and the wider player development programme. In outlining his philosophy, he stressed a person-first, player-second approach and the need to foster positive habits beyond the pitch.
He reflected that the role challenged him to build new relationships and operate across multidisciplinary teams, experiences he felt helped his growth. Dunne also thanked the players and staff he worked with, singling out Jamie A. Harley for trust and opportunities.
Before joining Sunderland, he served as a Physical Performance Coach and Sports Scientist with Wexford GAA, supporting the senior men’s football team. He was also Head of Youth Athletic Development at Ballyboden St Enda’s GAA in Dublin.
His departure forms part of changes at the Academy of Light. Alasdair Hamilton, Sunderland’s Under-21 Physical Performance Coach since April 2022, has also recently confirmed his exit.
