Manchester United showed a lot of drive and ambition in revamping their attack in the summer transfer window.
However, when it came to the side’s midfield, the club’s hierarchy seemingly addressed the concerns in a half-hearted manner.
In August, United identified Carlos Baleba as their dream midfield target. However, Brighton & Hove Albion swiftly rebuffed their interest.
As such, the Red Devils never made a formal bid to test Brighton’s resolve and instead approached Atletico Madrid late in the window to explore the possibility of signing Conor Gallagher.
Fabrizio Romano reported that United enquired about signing Gallagher on loan, but the La Liga outfit had no plans to let the midfielder leave on a temporary basis.
Now, Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) claim Premier League clubs, including United and Crystal Palace, are lurking ahead of the January transfer window.
The 25-year-old has failed to cement his place in Diego Simeone’s starting lineup, having only started twice in the first six games this season.
The ex-Chelsea man knows he needs to play regularly to have any chance of representing England at the next World Cup.
The Spanish outlet believe the Englishman is “a square peg in a round hole” for Simeone, who doesn’t appear to be a huge admirer of the player’s profile.
Gallagher is known for his tenacity and is capable of regularly galloping into the penalty area. However, he lacks technical prowess to play under pressure from the opposition.
Amorim doesn’t rely on his midfielders to progress the play. As such, the United head coach might find Gallagher’s ability to inject energy into his midfield relatively more appealing.
However, it is understood Atletico view Gallagher as an important player. It would take an offer of over €60 million to convince Los Rojiblancos to change their stance in the next window.
