Conor Hourihane has branded the manner of Lincoln City’s second goal as “crazy” following Barnsley’s 3-1 loss on Tuesday night.

The Tykes had earned their way back into the contest with a 67th minute equaliser courtesy of Davis Keillor-Dunn, who fired home from close range.

But the Yorkshire outfit conceded again almost immediately, going 2-1 down in the 68th minute after Tom Bayliss lobbed the goalkeeper after a routine long ball pass from George Wickens in goal.

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild, who opened the scoring in the 36th minute, sealed all three points for the Imps with a second goal of his own just a few moments later.

This was Hourihane’s side’s fifth defeat of the season, with the team now six points adrift of the play-off places following their midweek loss.

Hourihane has criticised the manner of Lincoln’s second goal on Tuesday night, suggesting that the team could’ve pushed for a win if they hadn’t immediately conceded after getting back into the contest.

He praised the team’s positive start to the second half, claiming they were on top of the game and deserved to score, but that the lack of composure after equalising was quite baffling.

"I asked the lads to step it up a couple of gears in the second half because I felt like the game was there for them, even though we were 1-0 down,” said Hourihane, via The Yorkshire Post.

“I didn't really think there was anything in the game.

"Until we scored, we played really, really well and it looked like we were going to score and were on the front foot and then after scoring, we had a complete moment of madness; I don't know what we are doing.

"To concede like that is crazy.

“I cannot get my head around it and don't know what they were thinking or doing as a team.

“We've worked so hard to get back in the game at a tough place and I feel like if we see out a couple of minutes, we go back to dominating the ball and creating more chances.

"But we just let them off the hook massively.

“Just stay solid for two or three minutes, regain your composure.

"We gave them the upper hand straightaway, which was crazy.

“Until the 67th minute at 1-1, I thought we played really well. We had them where we wanted, but we just threw it away."

Hourihane was appointed as permanent Barnsley manager in April after a brief stint in charge on an interim basis, and this is his first role as head coach since retiring.

It has been a mixed start to the campaign for the Tykes, who are aiming to fight for promotion from League One.

This was their second defeat in five games, leaving them 10th in the table, but with a couple of games in hand on some of their rivals.

Next up for Barnsley is a home clash against Leyton Orient on 13 December in a 3pm kick-off.

Barnsley threw away potential Lincoln result with lapse in concentration

Barnsley had worked their way back into the game against Lincoln, but it was really quite a bizarre lapse in concentration that ultimately cost them.

Going down 2-1 immediately after equalising was disastrous, and it’s no surprise that a third goal followed relatively quickly.

Hourihane will naturally be frustrated, particularly because the team had reacted well at the start of the second half and that good work was undone instantly in such a simple way.
