Consistency a key contributor to England success says Chelsea’s Carter | OneFootball

Chelsea defender Jess Carter says that a consistent run of games has helped her to grow into her role in the England team.

The 25-year-old has had to be patient for game-time with the Lionesses but she has now started the last six games for her country.

Carter’s solid performances in an England shirt in 2023 have resulted in the player cementing her starting place in the side. When speaking to the England press pack after last night’s 2-1 victory over Scotland in the UEFA Women’s Nations League, Carter said that a run of games for the national team is really helping her to push on.

“I’ve had no choice, I went from not playing to playing, so obviously, I’ve had to grow,” Carter said.

“I think it’s just a lot of things have come from consistency, having consistent game-time can only give you that bit more confidence than what you had before.

“I think the understanding of the game and what Sarina (Wiegman) wants from us with England is really important and I’m just trying to keep on top of staying fit and staying fresh and yes, just trying to constantly learn and improve.”

England were given a game by opponents Scotland in Sunderland last night. The Lionesses looked to be cruising after goals from Lucy Bronze and Lauren Hemp had put them 2-0 up, however, Kirsty Hanson pulled a goal back for the visitors and they threatened on the counter throughout the second half. Carter said that the performance wasn’t perfect, both on a personal level and as a team, but getting the three points was what mattered.

She said “Obviously, the most important thing is to get three points, that’s what we did. Scotland definitely proved to be a tough opponent.

“Me personally, I wasn’t so happy with the performance for myself. Individually, on the ball, I think I definitely could have been better at times and as a team, we maybe got a bit sloppy and got a bit complacent.

“Obviously, the three points were the most important thing and it’s something to build on.”

England are back in UEFA Women’s Nations League action on Tuesday evening when they face The Netherlands in Utrecht.
