“For me Chelsea are still a work in progress, they are a constant project, and that is the frustration for the fans. Just short of two billion spent, surely you’re challenging for the title?” Robinson said while speaking to the BBC in the buildup to this evening’s game.
After years of pure accumulation, this summer the next phase began. Important first team players like Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson were moved on, but their replacements were youngsters.
It echoes the thoughts of Jamie Carragher not long ago, writing in the Telegraph in a piece which got a lot of blowback from Chelsea fans. However, plenty of other fans feel the “frustration” that Robinson is talking about.
“How long will the rebuild after Abramovich last?” former Liverpool star Carragher asked.
“At what point will they realize the need to buy ready-made, established stars who can take the team from fourth place to first, combining youth with experience? Chelsea have achieved the near impossible… They have spent £1.5bn to transform themselves from serial winners of major trophies to serial project managers.”
We can make him look silly if we go out and beat the Reds today, then win something big in the next couple of years. But does anyone think that’s realistic? So far we’re yet to see an improvement on last season, let along the sort of leap that could take us to a title or Champions League.
