Antonio Conte decided to take a few days off following the loss to Bologna and his post-game tirade against his players. He spent the early portion of the break in his home in Turin and resumed leading the practices on Monday.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, his return wasn’t particularly dramatic. His outburst won’t have lingering consequences. The gaffer decided to criticize the squad because he had seen some things he didn’t like, besides the results. Some footballers complained about his training methods, but he won’t change them.
Amid some resignation chatter, Conte was publicly backed by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, which he appreciated. Despite the disappointment, it seems like there wasn’t a real threat of the gaffer throwing in the towel.
The Partenopei were dealt another blow during the international break, losing Frank Anguissa for a couple of months. They’ll face Atalanta, Roma, and Juventus next. They need to pick it up in the Champions League too. The boss hasn’t held any special meeting with the players so far. It might happen after all those on international duties return, but there’s no need for a redde rationem.
It looks like the storm has passed, but, while it wasn’t the first time he’s done it, his harsh remarks and impromptu vacation can’t simply be swept under the rug. We’ll see whether the squad will react, as he probably hopes, or revolt. The second outcome would lead to unforeseen events. The only silver lining about all their injuries is that the boss is in his sweet spot now. Winning amid all these problems is a more motivating challenge than doing so as the favorites.
