Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung reports that contract negotiations between Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schlotterbeck are pretty straightforward.
The club and player had an agreement that until Schlotterbeck had returned from his meniscus injury, negotiations over a contract extension would be put on hold.
On Sunday, Schlotterbeck made his return to the Dortmund starting 11 in their 1-0 win against Wolfsburg.
Now, negotiations over a new contract will begin, and there is unlikely to be any hurdles. The 25-year-old’s current deal expires in 2027, and he is expected to double his salary to €10m with his new extension. On top of this, there is also talk of Schlotterbeck becoming the face of the club going forward and would eventually be given the captain’s armband.
Dortmund had started the season strongly, but were weak in the centre-back department following injuries to Emre Can and Niklas Süle, along with the already absent Schlotterbeck. This prompted die Schwarzgelben to bring in a centre-back on loan from Chelsea in the summer, but the return to Schlotterbeck means they have their best defender back.
