Oral arguments in the matter of controversial agent Roger Wittmann’s lawsuit against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim commenced on Friday morning. As expected, lawyers representing the Bundesliga club presented evidence supporting Wittmann’s ban from the PreZero Arena. An audio file on which Wittmann is documented insulting club chairmen Jörg Albrecht ultimately proved decisive.
Further allegations were made. Hoffenheim alleged that Wittmann insulted several Hoffenheim officials and threatened to beat up club manager Dr. Markus Schütz. Wittmann’s insults extended to club academy director Frank Kramer and current sporting director Andreas Schicker. Wittmann’s defense attempted to argue that these allegations were untrue, yet weren’t able to overcome the damning piece of evidence contained in the audio file.
Wittmann directly called Albrecht a “Wichser“; a German swear word with maximum insulting connotations. A rough British translation would probably be “wanker“. In American parlance, “Wichser” translates to “motherf***er“. Hoffenheim lawyers skillfully brought the evidence before the court after Wittmann’s denials, setting the figure the club very much wants away from its operations as a perjurer.
An official verdict in the case is not expected until next week. Wittmann’s lawyers weren’t able to offer up much in defense of their client apart from promises that he would not use such language in the future. Even if (rather unexpectedly at this point) Wittmann wins the lawsuit and regains access to the stadium, it would amount to nothing more than a Pyrrhic victory.
The unsavory details brought to light in the hearing certainly won’t enable Wittmann to comfortably attend Hoffenheim Bundesliga fixtures. Wittmann’s current profile will certainly render visiting matches incognito very difficult. Hoffenheim themselves have not yet issued official comment on the matter, merely releasing a statement that they will wait until the verdict is returned.
