The Copa Libertadores tie between Medellin and Flamengo was halted on Thursday night after serious crowd disorder. According to Le Progres, home fans were protesting against the club’s leadership over poor results.
The referee took the players off as flares were lit, objects were set on fire and projectiles were thrown towards the pitch.
About 50 minutes after the interruption, local authorities ordered a full evacuation of the Atanasio Girardot via loudspeakers.
Conmebol later cancelled the match in a post on its X account. In such cases, the confederation generally imposes strict disciplinary measures under its regulations, which can include disqualification and heavy fines.
Flamengo sporting director José Boto, speaking in a video recorded inside the visitors’ dressing room, said responsibility did not lie with his club and argued the hosts failed to ensure safety. He called for his team to be awarded the three points.
