Valencia will begin pre-season on Thursday 2 July in Paterna without a senior right-back, with Thierry Rendall and Renzo Saravia absent and Dimitri Foulquier sidelined long term. The shortage, plus a lack of signings, means Carlos Corberán will turn to the academy.
According to Superdeporte, Rodrigo Gamón has been called up to train with the first team, a reward for his form with Valencia Mestalla last season. Corberán plans to use him chiefly as a winger, though he can also operate at right-back.
The 2008-generation academy player first stood out as a winger and even a second striker, noted for his pace, direct running and eye for goal. He impressed in the Juvenil División de Honor before becoming important for the B team last term.
A subsequent move to right-back at Paterna accelerated his development, adding greater game understanding and timing to his attacking instincts. He now offers energy going forward, intensity in defence and versatility across different systems and roles.
Meanwhile Valencia are scouring the market for right-backs, targeting an experienced starter for next season. Thomas Meunier is the leading option, with negotiations under way during the World Cup at Corberán’s request, and the club still hopeful of a deal. They are also assessing under-23 candidates who could be registered with the B team, while Gamón steps up for now.
