Following France’s 2-1 win over Belgium in their second group game of Euro 2022, manager Corinne Diacre spoke to broadcasters TF1 about the game, which Les Bleues really should have put to bed much earlier in the game. The boss made references to France’s self-doubt, which is a much-discussed topic at this Women’s Euros, following ruptures in the squad ahead of the tournament, as well as a history of elimination at the quarter-final stage. She also spoke about star striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto’s knee injury, which forced her to leave the pitch early in the first half. Her words were transcribed by RMC Sport.
“It was important to win tonight. We knew the result of the Italy vs Iceland match (1-1). Winning tonight puts is through in first position. We’ll be able to project ourselves further still. The problem is when we don’t manage to secure things, we start to doubt ourselves. We were also up against a great Belgian team, who defended well and played with all their strength.”
“The only downside is Marie’s injury. I hope it’s not too serious. It’s the knee. We’ll have to wait for the exams but we’ll try to have one done tomorrow, pretty quickly.”
