Corinthians captain Rodrigo Garro has backed Hugo Souza for Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad, with Carlo Ancelotti set to name 26 players at 17:00 on Monday.

According to ge.globo, Brazil are likely to take three goalkeepers, with Alisson and Ederson close to certainties, and Hugo competing with Bento and possibly Weverton for the final spot.

Hugo is among six Brazilian keepers on the 55-man provisional list, selected by Ancelotti with goalkeeper coach Claudio Taffarel. The others are Alisson Becker of Liverpool, Bento of Al-Nassr, Ederson of Fenerbahçe, Jhon of Nottingham Forest and Weverton of Grêmio.

Speaking in the mixed zone after Sunday’s defeat to Botafogo, Garro said Hugo has shown his quality for Corinthians, has been crucial for the side and he hopes the call arrives. He praised the keeper’s positivity and influence in the dressing room.

Since Ancelotti took charge, Hugo has been in all five squads. In March he was only called after Alisson was withdrawn, and his sole start brought a 3-2 loss to Japan on 14 October. He missed November 2025 with a left thigh muscle injury.

Even if he is overlooked initially, FIFA rules allow any goalkeeper in the provisional group to replace one in the final squad at any time during the tournament in cases of serious injury or illness. The squad will assemble on 27 at Granja Comary.
