Corinthians defender on Majestoso win: praises Fiel, eyes season

With two goals from Yuri Alberto and one from Memphis Depay, Corinthians defeated São Paulo on Thursday night (20th), 3-1, in a match valid for the 34th round of the Brazilian Championship. After the match, defender Gustavo Henrique analyzed the Majestoso and praised the result achieved.

“It’s always important to win the derby, it’s always very good to win. We were coming off two defeats, one of them at home in front of our fans. We owed them, and today the first half was very good, in the second half we wavered a bit, but we never stopped believing, we managed to get the win. Now it’s about growing for the 10th, so we can make fewer and fewer mistakes and be very strong against Cruzeiro.”, the player began in the mixed zone.

“I think we’ve been thinking a lot about the Copa do Brasil for a long time and we’ve really been preparing because we know our main goal is the 10th, to arrive well on the 10th, but we also can’t stop thinking about these four games (of the Brasileirão), we represent a very big shirt that demands victory and for that we have to improve every game, see what we did wrong in this last game and in these recent games so we can strengthen ourselves for the 10th, so we don’t make the mistakes we’ve been making, so we come very strong for the match.”, he continued.

Gustavo Henrique was also asked about the need for Corinthians to make adjustments in defending aerial balls after conceding a goal in the derby. In addition to explaining the play, the defender pointed out that the team has been doing well in this type of situation and that there is no reason for concern.

“We’ve been doing very well, definitely, especially in aerial balls. We had hardly been conceding goals (from aerial balls), I think today we conceded only our second goal from an aerial ball in the championship. Actually, after I saw the play, I was going up for the ball and ended up colliding with Carrillo, so I couldn’t jump.”, commented the defender.

“And there’s also a lot of credit for the opponent’s delivery. We’re not playing against just anyone, we’re playing against a great opponent who deserved credit, took advantage of our mistake, managed to score, but we didn’t give up and stuck to the plan from the beginning.”, he added.

Timão’s number 13 also spoke about the importance of Fiel at Neo Química Arena and celebrated the unbeaten record in derbies the team maintained in 2025. The defender praised the Corinthians fans and pointed out the difficulty this causes for opponents.

“We feel very good, derbies are always very different, especially playing at home. We’re very happy with these stats, when we play with our fans it’s very hard to beat us. And we feel this different atmosphere in the derby. We’ve had good results at home and now it’s time to think about the next match.”, said Gustavo Henrique.

“For sure (the fans make a difference). Even for the opponent who scores and thinks they’re going to grow in the game, they end up deflating a bit because they see the fans encouraging us even more when we concede a goal. I think we never want to concede, so they don’t need to push us, but the support is total for 90 minutes, both in joy and in sadness, they’re by our side. I hope to bring more and more joy so they can be happy and not need to support us when we concede.”, he added.

Gustavo Henrique also praised the quality of striker Memphis Depay and commented on his reaction at the moment of the goal scored by him. The Dutchman came off the bench in the Majestoso and scored, putting Alvinegro back in front after nutmegging Sabino and firing a powerful shot into goalkeeper Rafael’s net.

“Memphis is a very special player. When he managed to make the play, I already started running, because he’s really a great finisher, who hardly ever misses that kind of shot, and he’s different, a special player, and we’re happy to be with him every day.”

Corinthians now remain focused on the national competition. Next Sunday (23rd), at 8:30 pm (Brasília time), Alvinegro will visit Cruzeiro at Mineirão Stadium, for the 35th round of the Brazilian Championship, in a preview of the two Copa do Brasil semifinal matches.
